1944, les Etats-Unis s’apprètent à débarquer en France. Il leur faut enrôler des fantassins par milliers. C’est notamment l’Armée du Salut et la Croix-Rouge qui s’en occupent, en appâtant des jeunes hommes sans le sou avec de quoi boire et de quoi manger, l’uniforme à la clef. Dans cette chanson de Leadbelly, un père de famille tente amèrement d’expliquer à sa fille affamée qu’il n’ira pas taper à la porte de ces maudites boutiques.
